DUMBO: Get Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass
6 11Get down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass for a great escape from the city while still being in it. DUMBO is a great relaxing and quiet neighborhood in Brooklyn right by the water. And there are great sites to see and places to check out. Read on for the details!

New York sure loves its acronym neighborhoods, from Tribeca (Triangle Below Canal) to Soho (South of Houston) and then up to Noho (you guessed it… North of Houston). And come on people, we all know they added that redundant O (Overpass) so that the neighborhood wouldn’t be called DUMB. But regardless, it’s one of my favorite spots.

Easily accessible by subway (F to York Street or A to High Street) or by walking over the Brooklyn or Manhattan Bridge from Manhattan, DUMBO is a neighborhood definitely worth exploring. As you stroll down its quaint little streets, there’s no doubt you’ll notice glimpses of old Brooklyn – the cobble stone streets (or the little that’s left of them) and even old train tracks that were used to carry cargo into warehouses.
If you’re getting hungry, check out Almondine Bakery on Water Street (between Main Street and Washington Street). They’re said to have the best macaroons in Brooklyn! Try it for yourself and see what you think!

When you’re done, why not head back over to the water for some fresh air. But first, since you’re already on Washington Street, take that classic photo of the Manhattan Bridge!

There are some benches set up by the water in case you need to sit down to soak in the beautiful sights or if you feel like eating your lunch with a view!

If you’re with your kids or just reminiscent of your youth, try hopping onto Jane’s Carousel – an old revitalized carousel that they’ve put right by the water ($2 per ride)!
For those of you that still listen to your music in analogue check out Halcyon, a little hole-in-the-wall music store at the corner of Pearl Street and Water Street – they’ve got a huge selection of vinyls!

Now, you may be wondering how you should end your night. Spend it in DUMBO! If you’re in the mood for a show – be it new music concert, film screening, or a dance performance – Galapagos Art Space is the place to hit up. What used to be a horse stable is now a unique performance venue with a crazy interior – it’s got a lake inside with island seating!

But if you’re just looking for a bar or perhaps Mexican food or BOTH, try Pedro’s Spanish American Restaurant on the corner of Front Street and Jay Street!

Most importantly, make sure you bring your camera(s) to DUMBO cause there are many great shots to be had!
