House Track at the Athens, Alabama Freight Depot

The building on the left was built by the L&N, Louisville and Nashville Railroad, as a freight depot for Athens, Alabama. The track on the right of this picture is now the mainline for CSX between Birmingham, Alabama and Nashville, Tennessee. The remnant of track in the middle is the house track for the freight depot, where less than car load freight were loaded and unloaded, and also served as a team track for businesses without rail service. The track has not been used in years but is still connected to the rail system. The freight depot has not been used by the railroad for years. It now is home to the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives.
