Building Downtown

Kodak 2238 shot with Nikon N90s and Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens. Shot at ISO 6. Developed in Edwal-12 one shot stand developer 1:9 for 45 minutes at 70 degrees F. A couple of shots were accidentally metered wrong and over exposed by about 5 stops. Still useable to scan

How old is your 2238 Mike? I wonder if it's a bit fogged. The stuff I've shot has been super high contrast and very clean in tone and razor sharp. Its not that this doesn't look good, just different :)

@charliedontsurf 2019. I don't think there is really a film issue. This picture here is pretty highly edited. There are a couple of "native scans" in here but even a scanner fiddles with things. The issues, overall, are 1 - I intentionally used a fine grain developer to soften the images because this is potentially a high contrast film and I wanted something different - more typical (I know, I'm weird). Had I used D-96 or D-97 I'm sure it would be sharper. 2 - I have no idea how good this lens, and, especially, my eye sight are, LOL. Most eveything is manual focus. 3 - I did screw up on about 1/3 or more of this roll because I left the meter on manual and I thought it was on Aperture priority so I was pulling a 1/6 shutter speed which probably added to the not very sharp effects. 4 - I dunno I just poured a new batch of fix and I did not agitate anything I think I got some drag from that. I don't think Edwal-12 is the best stand developer either, but that was an experiment. I think the best shots to judge are: www.lomography.co.th/homes/mike1allison/albums/2363200-firs… and www.lomography.co.th/homes/mike1allison/albums/2363200-firs… understanding that the DOF for the second is fairly shallow and that really is handheld at about 1/15 but the in focus stuff is sharp and has deep contrast I think.

So, long answer, yes I was trying to do something else with this, and that developer was a bit of a lark. I think I'll try it in a glycin only developer and see what comes of that, and the kalogen or some rodinal... But, hey that's what you get with me. If it was razor sharp you wouldn't even know it was me!! LOL :D

@mike1allison yeah those look more akin to what I'm used too. Its great that you have an explanation, I wouldn't be able to do that. I still think that as an all purpose one size fits all kind of thing rodinal takes some beating, especially if one can be bothered to go through the agitation processs and avoid the dreaded temptation of cats piss stand development, Malcolm Tremain's description not mine:) have you brewed your own version of that yet, I can't remember?

@charliedontsurf I did. It's actually a little more potent. Went to all the trouble of smashing up tylenol tablets and everything. I used it a few times and now I have it sitting to check the longevity. But yes most people use it properly and it performs well for its uses. Part if this for me is learning how all these things work so someday I might actually make informed choices. I know if I have something important I can use commercial rodinal the way it was intended and it will probably work fine or I can brew the right stuff, I guess. In these covid days there isn't much chance to do anything marvelous although I am intrigued by how interesting some of these everyday scenes come out.
