Going to Eat Horse Meat in Catania, Italy
7 6 Share TweetLast Saturday I went to Catania. We got there to buy some reptiles but the main purpose was actually to go and eat horse meat. It was a long way, I live in Palermo which is at the northern coast of Sicily and Catania is at the far east side of this island, but in some ways it was worth it.
So I went to Catania, a city situated on the east coast of Sicily and according to Google Maps it is 207km from Palermo. So we can say that it’s very, very, very far because here in Sicily, the roads suck (by train this trip would have taken ages).
I went to Catania with two friends because one of them had to buy some reptiles, so all three of us got in the car and I have to say that the main purpose of the two of us for going was just to eat horse meat.
I started dreaming about horse meat two months ago, after trying everything that they were selling on the street in Palermo – that is only for real men aha..and in Catania they sell horse meat just as in Palermo where they sell spleen sandwiches, bowels, gutter, fried gristle etc. which means anywhere in Catania they are crazy for horse meat.
If you go there you will find in every corner of the city some street food vendor offering horse meat. You can ask for a meat sandwich and they’ll give you a horse meat sandwich with olive oil and lemon juice. The meat used here is roasted. In the neighborhoods of the city you can also find restaurants with a menu filled with every kind of recipe made with this kind of meat.
So after eating three sandwiches I went home but I have to say, a spleen sandwich is so, so, so much better!
