Searching for Contrast in Berlin with the Babylon Kino B&W ISO 13 Film – by Mathias Benninghoven

Mathias Bennighoven, aka analogdaze, explored Berlin with the new Babylon Kino B&W ISO 13 Film with all its sunny and shady faces and talked to us about his impressions of the new film.

Mathias is a 35mm film lover with a penchant for dark and melancholic themes. He especially liked the intense contrasts and elegant greyscales of the Babylon Kino B&W ISO 13 Film.

"Being on the road with this film and experimenting with it without knowing exactly what I was getting into really fascinated me."

Due to the quarantine, Mathias could not carry out the planned portrait shoot, instead, he concentrated on the quiet moments of his environment and searched for impressive light and shadow conditions in Berlin architecture. He was on the road with the Babylon Kino B&W ISO 13 film, his Canon AE-1 Program, and a 50mm f1.8 lens.

Previously, Mathias always shot with a minimum ISO value of 100.

"So ISO13 was totally new territory for me. I was probably a little over-cautious and searched more for suitable subjects and the right lighting than usual."

He photographed on two consecutive days, one sunny and one slightly overcast.

"I achieved the best results mainly at f1.8 and 1/15s to 1/30s and shot from hand. Next time I would pack a tripod."

Mathias about his favourite photo:

"I like best the picture of the colonnades on the Museum Island. There, the film displayed its strengths and delivered extremely rich contrasts, sharpness, and very little graininess."

His tip for the Babylon Kino B&W ISO 13 film:

"The B&W ISO 13 is probably my go-to film for playing with light and shadow on bright summer days. As a general tip I would pack a fast lens and leave the aperture wide open, the film is quite light spoiled."
