Around the World: Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, Japan

“Around the World in Analogue” is your bite-size guide to the most amazing travel destinations across the globe, as documented by the members of the Lomography community. Today, Lomographer Bernard Ang, who goes by the moniker @bang810, takes us to the historic villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, located in the Chubu region of central Japan.

"The thatched, and steep-roofed 'gassho-zukuri' houses found in the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama are rare examples of their kind in Japan. Located in a river valley surrounded by the rugged and mountainous Chubu region, these villages were remote and isolated, which made access to the area difficult. They only put on the lights at night a few instances per year so I was so glad to have obtained tickets to witness this rare occasion."
"A distinct feature of the houses is the steep roof (of 45 degree to 60 degree). They are called 'gassho zukuri' because the houses resemble palms placed together and fingers pointing upward in prayer. No nails or other metal materials are used. A serene place (listed on the UNESCO's World Heritage Site) not to be missed."
