Meet our LomoGuru: Duffman

6

Lomographer Martynas, or duffman in the community, has a penchant for finding poetry in the mundane. From the rigid, geometric patterns of the city from the natural formation of pristine landscapes, the photographs he takes reveal the hidden beauty of the places he had been to.

His impressive body of work also centers on people. His portraiture, however, is not merely a combination of good lighting and clever framing. The emotions he channels out of his subjects speak volumes of the connections he made with them.

Discover what makes this young LomoGuru tick and his inspiring work outside photography in this interview.

Tell us about yourself and what you do.

Hello! My name is Martynas. I‘m 21 years old and currently volunteering for two organisations, ARSP and EZRA, in New York, Manhattan. My job is basically to visit elders and help them in their daily life out. The most important part is to socialize them to prevent isolation and loneliness. During my free time, I try to explore NYC with my cameras and skateboard as much as possible.

At the end of August, I‘m going back to Germany and then to Lithuania to do some projects and visit my family and friends. Then I‘m traveling for four months to Vietnam and India for a photographic expedition.

Tell us something about your LomoHome’s name. Why did you decide to have that username? Or if that’s your actual name, what would be a different LomoHome name you’d like to have?

There is not much to say about my LomoHome name. [Laughs]. It’s a funny figure from Simpsons. I don‘t remember why I took it.

Share with us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

There were many. It was really nice to win some of the competitions or have the opportunity to test the Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens. It is also always fun to join the workshops at the gallery store.

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends? If yes, name at least one of them.

I have quite a few friends that are on Lomo, @luis_kohl, @stratos, @paulherrmann, and @maxbarthel. Check their LomoHomes!

While living in New York I met almost everybody from the NYC Gallery Store (@katphip, @polt and @devin) who supported me a lot in different ways which I really appreciate!

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

Definitely! As long there is film, I will shoot film. Digital is easy and that’s why boring. Film is love, film is life! To shoot Lomo films and cameras is even more fun.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences using this camera?

Of course, it‘s the Lomo LC-A. Why? For the same reason all of us love it. It‘s small, easy to handle. You can be very creative and the results are magic.

Please share with us your favorite Lomographic shot and explain why you love that particular image.

I really can‘t think of my favorite Lomograph.

But this triple exposure photo describes pretty well what Lomography is for me. For fun, I shot a roll three times and cross processed it. After seeing this image I couldn’t believe how nice it came out.

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?

Take a slide film and cross process it.

If there’s one song or movie that best describes your Lomo life, which one is it and why?

Fabian’s “This Friendly World” (or the Jim Carrey and R.E.M version). The song goes this world is such a wonderful place. That’s how I feel and what I try to capture while shooting with a Lomo camera. My “Leica life” is sometimes the opposite.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Experiment, be creative and have fun!

Thank you @duffman for being an inspiration to the community!
