Making Memories: My Favorite Childhood Photos

To say that I was frequently photographed as a child is an understatement. My father had several film cameras back then. He took photography seriously as a hobby and I was one of his favorite subjects.

If my father hadn’t taken time to take pictures and have them printed, I wouldn’t have photos to remind me of my youth. I would have to less to share on social media on Throwback Thursdays and neither would I have solid proof of the most important events of my childhood.

I was able to gather some of my favorite photos. And I’d like to share them with you. Please pardon the embarrassing ones.

My father took photos of me and my mother whenever he felt like it. Sometimes he’d be more creative, as what he did with the photo shown above. The black and white photograph was actually taken as an afterthought to a photo shoot he had with my mom. It’s one of my favorites.

Most of my childhood photos were solo portraits. Sometimes my father would tell me to dress up so he could take nice pictures.

But most of the time he would take my picture during quiet moments at home, while I quietly played in my room or sat in the living room.

And a few with cousins and playmates.

Photographs were an enormous and important part of my childhood. When my dad couldn’t take photos for some reason, he would even hire a photographer, just as he did when this photo was taken during an important family event:

Admittedly, I do feel a tinge of nostalgia when I look at my childhood photos. But it’s not all about going back to the past and turning to mush when memories hit you. It’s also how your experiences as a child have added up to help you become the person you are now. And so it’s always good to preserve your memories, especially the happy ones.

Nothing beats capturing and preserving those memories the analogue way.
