In paleontology you have index fossils, and the best index fossils are easy to ID, wide-spread and occurring over a small span of time. Geologically, that might be a million years. Let's hope these times are necessarily short, maybe 2 more weeks more at the most. What politician might proclaim with a loud voice the All's clear, when he/she knows it is safe resume "normal" routine?

@brine I would guess you were in Jersey at 9-11, maybe saw those things first hand. Would you say these times were comparable to the 9-11 aftermath?

@neufotomacher This is really different. We weren't forced to stay inside or social distance. I live about 20 miles away from ground zero, could see the smoke in the sky and even smell it.

Man, smell memory for me is particularly powerful. I am not sure if we in California are bound by some secret legislation to stay inside unless we need to shop, but it is hard to translate political/government messages. They "direct" that we stay inside-lock down, whatever they might call it. Our governor, Gavin Newsome became state executive around 2 years ago, and never made much public appearance, as far as I remember, until this coronavirus became the February 2020 issue. He could have passed for the groundhog. I do know a pub I frequented, that frequently let patrons smoke within after California passed laws not allowing smoking inside. It seemed they would pay a penalty every 2 or 3 months it seemed, maybe $2500 a pop. Our counties were not uniform in what they agreed I guess. That same pub was open for St. Patrick's day, though things, at least at 11pm were not very active. It was opened the next night also, then it turned to take-out, and they would serve you alcohol at the bar if you were waiting for a meal to be cooked up-they even sell beer off the tap in a take-out disposable container that they tell you had to be carried in the trunk of your car. Well, I imagine how that is playing out. I saw the infection rate in India and it was remarkable low-India seems to have conditions that are a haven for fast infection spread, yet so far it doesn't seem to be the case. India is in latitudes that have high UV. I see that Seattle and NYC, much of Europe are out of that area, i.e., they have less UV. Maybe with dense populations and less UV, this kind of virus has much reign. In California, at present, it seems the counties that are on the ocean have the highest infection rates as well. I live in San Bernardino county, which is larger than many countries. We are probably middle range of population for California counties.

@neufotomacher NJ has basically put in a stay at home unless you are an essential worker. There is only take-out food and grocery stores for food ... fortunately the liquor stores are open!!! We have the second highest infection rate behind NY ... The town I live in has over 300 confirmed positive cases and 4 deaths as of now.

Damn, 4 deaths just for your town. Stay safe. I am glad we have the internet as an option for activity.
