Very Large Array
The VLA is astronomical observatory consisting of 27 large dish shaped antennas that are connected to work together as one very large radio telescope. The array is arranged on three arms shaped like a Y, each arm is 13 miles/21 km long. The Antenna can be repositioned along the arms using the specially designed Hein's Trein on the railroad tracks that form the Y-shape.
@slobill That is for sure, but I'm really glad we took the drive down there from where we were staying in Santa Fe just to see have vast it is. You must be quite the astronomy buff to have driven thru in '95, that's two years before the movie Contact. ;-)
